They’re not engineers, but they play them on TV.Thesps Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar of “The Big Bang Theory” have been tapped to host the 62nd Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards, set for Aug. 14 at the Renaissance Hotel. Honorees include Digidesign, now part of Avid Technology, and Desilu, both of which will receive the Philo T. Farnsworth award. The kudo for Desilu, the production banner once owned by Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, recognizes the technique pioneered in the early 1950s when the company filmed “I Love Lucy” in front of a studio audience on multiple cameras using 35mm film. The practice made the show immediately available for distribution on high-quality prints and is credited with helping establish the syndication business. The honor is timed to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary. The lifetime achievement laurels will go to Robert Seidenglanz, an early developer of mobile TV newsgathering, and the late Ron Estes, a sound mixer for “The Tonight Show” who steered the transition of TV audio from mono to stereo and on to surround and 5.1. The Academy will also bestow an Engineering Emmy to Nexus Digital Audio Routing and Emmy Plaques to Showtime Sports Interactive, pCAM application, Apple Final Cut Studio and Avid Media Access.
