Comedy Central promotes Bernath

Programming exec takes on multiplatform duties

Comedy Central has promoted David Bernath to exec VP in charge of program strategy and multiplatform programming.

Bernath’s recent deals include securing syndie rights for FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and NBC’s “30 Rock” to air on Comedy Central. He also brokered a deal for an original sitcom starring Jon Heder that’s scheduled to launch on the cabler this year, as well as 26 new episodes of reborn animated comedy “Futurama.”

“Original programming is what defines us,” Bernath told Daily Variety. “I always say that, even though I’m the acquisitions and strategy guy. … (But) it’s nice to find syndicated programming that you think will compliment your originals and your launches.”

Bernath, who reports to network prexy Michele Ganeless, will be reponsible for programming content across Comedy Central’s existing digital outlets.

“Our core viewers are your classic early adopters — tech-savvy consumers who are used to watching content on their phones and their computers,” Bernath said.

Previously, Bernath was programming VP at BBC America and program planning VP at E!, where he worked from 1994-2002.
