Character actor Sam Menning, who starred most recently in “My Name Is Earl,” died March 29 in Los Angeles of emphysema. He was 85.
Menning frequently played drunks, hobos and homeless men (on IMDb.com his credits are frequently listed as wino, homeless man, toothless guy, drunk, old guy and geezer), sometimes so well that he was barred from the set until he was cleared by security. Besides “Earl,” he featured in “Yes, Dear,” “ER,” “Scrubs,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Profiler.”
Film credits include “The Butcher’s Wife,” “Dutch” and “Life Stinks.”
He served in the Merchant Marines for 15 years and was a professional photographer in New York from 1954-78.
He is survived by his companion of 48 years, Karina Von Wattidel; a daughter; a brother; and four grandchildren.
