CBS turns to Friend for local news chief

Head of news division bumped up to senior VP gig

Former CNBC’er David Friend has been named senior veep of news for the CBS Television Stations Group. Friend has worked for CBS since 2006, when he became veep and news director at the Eye’s N.Y. flagship station, WCBS-TV.

Now, Friend’s responsibilities are expanded to include oversight of local news at all of CBS’ O&Os. Friend will also work with CBS Radio execs and liaise with CBS News proper.

Prior to his time at CBS, Friend was prexy in charge of business news at the Peacock’s biz net, where he oversaw programming including the Peabody-winning docu “The Age of Walmart.”

“Since (he joined) us, the quality of our newscasts has significantly and consistently improved, as have the ratings,” said division prexy Peter Dunn in a statement.

Promotion is effective immediately.
