Larry Charles and Ant Hines behind comedy
CBS has greenlighted a comedy pilot presentation from the “Borat” team of Larry Charles and Ant Hines.Also Thursday, newcomer Jimmy Wolk was tapped for the lead role in Fox’s drama pilot “Midland,” while Laz Alonso (“Avatar”) will star in the Fox drama pilot “Breakout Kings.” Untitled Hines/Charles comedy centers on a dad — played by Paul Kaye — who reenters the life of his now-famous daughter. Hines wrote the pilot and will exec produce with Charles. Tantamount’s Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Mitch Hurwitz will exec produce as well. Sony Pictures TV is the studio. Project reps the second presentation of the season for Charles, who also has a semi-scripted project in the works at NBC, along with Wonderland’s McG and Peter Johnson. Hines wrote both “Borat” and “Bruno,” while Charles — whose TV credits include “Mad About You,” “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — directed “Bruno.” In the case of “Midland,” Wolk will play Bob, a con artist who’s looking to get inside his wealthy in-laws’ oil business. Thesp appeared in last year’s ABC pilot “Solving Charlie.” He also starred as a teacher with Tourettes Syndrome in the Hallmark Hall of Fame telepic “Front of the Class.” Joining “Midland” are exec producers Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman (“Party of Five”), who will exec produce along with writer Kyle Killen. Other EPs include Kerry Kohansky Roberts and Paul Weitz. Mark Webb is directing. Keyser and Lippman more recently have worked on “In Treatment.” 20th Century Fox TV is behind “Midland.” As for “Breakout Kings,” pilot centers on former fugitives who are tapped to work as U.S. Marshals. Alonso’s credits include “Dirty Sexy Money” and “The Unit,” as well as the features “Fast and Furious” and “Stomp the Yard.” “Breakout Kings” comes from writers Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora. Both are EPs, along with Gavin Hood, who’s directing.
