CBS announces fall premieres

Network to rollout majority of premieres week of Sept. 20

CBS made it official Thursday: This year’s fall TV premiere week may require a SigAlert.

The massive premiere week bottleneck comes as the Big 4 all plan to roll the majority of their wares the week of Sept. 20.

Actually, CBS — which never deviated from premiere week, even as rivals once experimented with staggered launches — appears to be the more adventurous of the nets.

While the other nets have stayed away from supersized premiere episodes this year, CBS will launch with a two-hour “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Its “Survivor: Nicaragua” will bow a week before fall, on Sept. 15 (early premieres are standard practice for “Survivor”), while its Sunday sked won’t be fully in place until Oct. 3.

For its premiere week Sunday lineup, CBS is acknowledging that football overruns generally play havoc with the night’s timeslots.

That’s why, at least in week one, “60 Minutes” will air from 7:30-8:30, while “The Amazing Race” preem will go for 90 minutes, from 8:30-10 p.m. Such a move should help DVR users, who are usually out of luck with CBS’ football-impacted Sunday sked in the fall. (But after premiere week, all bets are still off.)

CBS’ fall launches Sept. 15 with “Survivor: Nicaragua,” the 21st edition of the hit reality staple.

Then, the net’s Monday night sked — “How I Met Your Mother,” “Rules of Engagement,” “Two and a Half Men” and newcomers “Mike and Molly” and “Hawaii Five-0” — starts Sept. 20.

On Sept. 21, the eighth season launch of “NCIS” is followed by the two-hour soph season bow of “NCIS: Los Angeles.” “The Good Wife” returns to 10 p.m. Sept. 28.

Not only should the two-hour “NCIS: L.A.” give CBS a ratings boost on the night, but it also gives the Eye an extra “Good Wife” episode to play with later on, and puts a stronger player opposite ABC’s “Detroit 1-8-7” preem.

On Sept. 22, the sixth season of “Criminal Minds” at 9 p.m. leads into new entry “The Defenders.” The next night, “The Big Bang Theory” moves to Thursday, followed by “$#*! My Dad Says,” “CSI” and “The Mentalist.”

The net’s Friday sked — “Medium,” “CSI: NY” and frosh “Blue Bloods” — starts Sept. 24.

On Sept. 26, there’s the hourlong “60 Minutes” at 7:30, followed by “Amazing Race” and “Undercover Boss.” The following week, Oct. 3, “60 Minutes” moves back to 7, with “Race” at 8, “Boss” at 9 and “CSI: Miami” back for its ninth season at 10.
