MSNBC gives O’Donnell a show

Guest pundit settles in for 10 p.m. ET slot

Producer and political analyst Lawrence O’Donnell, who has been guest host for MSNBC personalities Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews, will be getting a primetime show of his own.

The cabler announced Tuesday that O’Donnell is developing a show for the 10 p.m. ET slot where a replay of “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” currently runs. MSNBC has been looking to fill that slot for some time.

O’Donnell has been an MSNBC political analyst since 1996, but he’s also concentrated on a Hollywood career, having won an Emmy as producer and writer of “The West Wing” and having been the creator of the drama “Mister Sterling.” Although O’Donnell recently insisted to Variety’s Brian Lowry that he feels “like George Plimpton all the time” when filling in as anchor/host, his guest stints have been well received, as ratings have held when he substituted for Olbermann.

Before his TV career, O’Donnell was a longtime staffer on Capitol Hill, having served as senior adviser to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), chief of staff to the Senate’s Environment and Public Works committee, and chief of staff to the Senate’s Finance committee.

Although there is no launch date for his show, it’s expected to start sometime in the next several months.
