HBO Documentary Films has picked up U.S. TV rights to Tribeca Film Festival entry “My Trip to Al-Qaeda,” helmer Alex Gibney’s documentary feature.
Film is a collaboration between Gibney, who picked up an Oscar in 2007 for “Taxi to the Dark Side,” and Lawrence Wright, the journalist and author on whose solo stage show the doc is based. The legit production, which bowed Off Broadway in 2007, was in turn developed from Wright’s 2006 book “The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11.”
“My Trip to Al-Qaeda” is one of three pics from Gibney at Tribeca, along with an untitled project about former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer as well as fest closer “Freakonomics,” of which Gibney directed a seg.
Deal was negotiated by Cinetic Media’s John Sloss and HBO.
Doc will debut on the cabler in the fall.
