Talpa Media signs deal with Boomerang

BRUSSELS — Dutch reality TV pioneer John de Mol has moved into the Spanish market, announcing a joint venture between his Talpa Media company and Spain’s Boomerang TV Group.

Move continues a wave of international deals predicted by De Mol early in 2009.

The 50-50 joint venture company will have the exclusive right to sell, adapt and produce all Talpa formats in Spain. This includes reality TV, game shows and scripted formats.

Boomerang topper Jose Abril called the venture “a big step forward in realizing our strategy to consolidate Boomerang TV as a reference in the Spanish television market.”

Deal is the third in De Mol’s campaign of international expansion.

A similar joint venture company with Shine, covering France and French-speaking Belgium, was announced in December 2009, followed by a co-production deal with Warner Horizon in the U.S. in February 2010.

Germany, Italy and the U.K. are next on De Mol’s list for Europe, with Russia, India and China longer-term targets.

“When it comes to our growth strategy, Talpa is fast moving and very well on track,” De Mol said.
