CBS seals deals with showrunner pair

'Medium' scribes Sweeny, Doherty reup with studio

“Medium” showrunners Craig Sweeny and Robert Doherty have sealed separate overall deals with CBS TV Studios.

The two-year, seven-figure deals will keep Sweeny and Doherty in place as co-showrunners and exec producers on the series, should it return next season on CBS. Both scribes will also be on tap to develop their own projects at the studio.

New deals bode well for a “Medium” renewal, though nothing is official yet. Show, which moved to CBS this season after five at NBC, remains on the bubble, as does its Friday night companion, “Ghost Whisperer.”

Keeping both Sweeny and Doherty in place at CBS TV Studios was seen as crucial to keeping “Medium” humming along in the event that the show does indeed secure a seventh season. “Medium” creator Glenn Gordon Caron, of course, continues to head up the show.

Sweeny’s credits include “The 4400,” “Dr. Vegas” and “Playmakers.” Sweeny has also served as a director on “Medium” — including the show’s next original episode, which airs on April 30. (This week’s seg is a repeat.)

Doherty, meanwhile, has worked on shows including “Point Pleasant,” “Tru Calling,” “Dark Angel” and “Star Trek: Voyager.”

CBS TV Studios is behind “Medium,” which was created by Glenn Gordon Caron. Kelsey Grammer, Steve Stark and Ronald Schwary are also EPs with Sweeny and Doherty.

In other deal news Tuesday, “Smallville” creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, who had more recently turned their attention to the feature world, have sealed a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures TV.
