Betty White gets regular gig on sitcom

Strong performance in pilot propels 'Hot in Cleveland' role

Once again, Betty White has charmed her way into a series regular role.

White has signed on as a co-star of TV Land’s original sitcom “Hot in Cleveland.” White had been a guest star in the pilot, which revolves around three women from L.A. who relocate to Cleveland. But White was so good in the role of the snarky owner of the home that the women rent that “Hot” producers decided she had to be a regular.

Series, which stars Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves, is set to bow in June for a 10-episode run. It’s part of the Viacom-owned cabler’s push to expand into scripted fare.

White’s advancement to series regular on “Hot” is an echo of how she secured a series regular gig — and two Emmy wins — on “Mary Tyler Moore” for the role of the lascivious Sue Ann Nevins, which was originally envisioned as a guest shot.

The 88-year-old White is enjoying a burst of career heat during the past year. She logged a high-profile feature role in last summer’s B.O. hit “The Proposal,” and she’s been tapped to host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on May 8.series regular gig — and two Emmy wins — on “Mary Tyler Moore” for the role of the lascivious Sue Ann Nevins, which was originally envisioned as a guest shot.
