Big Star’s drummer Jody Stephens confirmed to SoundCheck that the group’s founding bassist Andy Hummel died Monday afternoon in Texas after a long struggle with cancer. A complete obituary will be up soon at Variety.com.
It’s been a rugged year for the Big Star family: Co-founder Alex Chilton died suddenly on March 17. The latter-day edition of the group was already scheduled to play a show at Antone’s during the South By Southwest Music Conference and Festival in Austin; Hummel was slotted to appear on a convention panel about the band. He ended up playing a couple of songs at the emotionally charged gig, which went on as a tribute to Chilton with a host of guests performing Big Star material with the core band of Stephens, Jon Auer and Hummel’s latter-day stand-in Ken Stringfellow.
