Here’s a groovalicious oddity: Chicago-based indie label Numero Group’s Oct. 19 release “Complete Mythology,” an 81-track compilation of Windy City soul man Syl Johnson’s early work, will drop on four CDs and six vinyl LPs — in the same massive package. The set rolls out at $75.
Numero Group — the distinguished crate-digging imprint founded in 2003 by Tom Lunt, Rob Sevier and Ken Shipley — has always had its feet planted in multiple format camps. It has issued most of its impreccable “Eccentric Soul” label compilations on LP, and it operates Numerophon, a vinyl-only subsidiary.
Last year, Numero issued its most ambitious project to date, “Light…On the South Side”; the release comprised a two-LP set of funk-blues and an elegant coffee-table book of photographs shot in the Chicago blues clubs of the mid-’70s by Michael L. Abramson. No CD edition was issued for the package.
