Mama mia! Louis Prima gets a Walk of Fame star

Louis_prima Dec. 7 marks the 100th anniversary of singer-trumpeter Louis Prima’s birth, and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will commemorate the event this Sunday (July 25), when Prima gets his own star on the Walk of Fame at 1615 N. Vine St. (about a block south of the Capitol Records Tower, home of the musician’s label of the ’50s and ’60s).

As part of the ceremony. Prima’s son Louis Jr. will perform an alfresco set. The younger Prima has a jumpin’ combo (called, like his father’s band, the Witnesses) that duplicates the old man’s extroverted nightclub set, playing such rollicking hits as “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” and “Oh Marie.” Singer Sarah Spiegel takes up the vocal style (but not the deadpan demeanor) of Prima Sr.’s foil Keely Smith on classics like “That Old Black Magic.”
