Madge magnifies ‘Glee’ album spree

'The Power of Madonna' tops U.S. chart

The high school chirpers of “Glee” and Madonna’s song catalog add up to a No. 1 album this week, as the hit Fox series’ third album spin-off enters at the top of the U.S. album chart.

“The Power of Madonna,” drawn from recent episode in which the show’s cast essayed the Material Girl’s songs, bows with a 98,000-unit opening week, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ending April 25.

Columbia package is first “Glee” collection to arrive at the apex: First volume peaked at No. 4, while sophomore set topped out at No. 3.

In a big week for soundtracks (and for Sony Music Entertainment), AC/DC’s soundtrack for “Iron Man 2” debuts at No. 4 with 76,000 sold. Columbia album arrived in stores nearly two weeks before its May 7 preem, and with a leg up on the competition — it went on sale April 19, a Monday, one day earlier than stanza’s other releases.

Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” (Capitol Nashville) picks up one spot and moves up to No. 2, shifting 83,000 (up 27%). The collection’s bounce comes courtesy of the Academy of Country Music’s awards show last weekend, where the country trio scooped up five trophies. (SoundScan reported overall country sales increased 18% this week.)

Though he’s generating international hysteria among his teen fans, Justin Bieber lags a little on the sales side at home this week: His new “My World 2.0” (Island) dips two positions to No. 3 with 81,000 sold (off 12%). Last year’s debut “My World” sees a two-slot uptick to No. 8, notching a slim 3% gain to shift 31,000.

R&B star Usher’s “Raymond V. Raymond” (LaFace) slides one rung to No. 5 with 52,000 sold (down 19%), while the EMI-distributed hits compilation “Now 33” maintains its No. 6 post with 37,000 sold (off 18%).

Week’s other fresh entry is Florida bard Jimmy Buffett’s “Encores,” which moves in at No. 7 with 31,000 sold.

Zipping up to No. 9 on the back of the ACM telecast, the Zac Brown Band’s “The Foundation” (Atlantic) gains six positions and receives a 26% lift, tracking 29,000 units. Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” (Interscope) falls three slots to No. 10 with sales of 28,000 (off 10%).

Rapper B.o.B, currently riding high with the hit “Nothin’ On You,” is the likely candidate for a major chart debut next week.
