Lord have mercy: the Shaggs get a “musical”

Shaggs1 The most bizarre music-theater news of the day comes courtesy of the New York Times, which reports that a musical based on the lives and times of the out-there ’60s sister act the Shaggs will play in the Apple in 2011.

Written by Joy Gregory and Gunnar Madsen, “The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World” will appear as a joint production of Playwrights Horizon and New York Theater Workshop. The show — which made a 2005 festival appearance in an earlier version — recaps the lives of siblings Dot, Betty and Helen Wiggin, who were thrashed into a band under the weighty hand of their father Austin.
