SoundCheck was a little startled by the vituperative tone of an LA Weekly music blog post assailing the Sunset Junction festival. The post, by contributor Molly Bergen, slams the 30-year-old Silver Lake event for its low-watt 2010 lineup and reliance on local acts.
None of this is way off base, on its face. The headliners for the Aug. 21-22 event — who include Bad Brains, the Ohio Players and local heroes Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros — are decidedly less electrifying than in the past. And many have complained in recent years about the steep $20 toll for the festival, which has grown increasingly overcrowded as its musical ambitions have waned.
But it appears there was an invisible agenda here.
