Dig those ‘fros! “Thunder Soul,” a new documentary about an extremely funky Texas high school band, makes its Los Angeles debut June 26 at an L.A. Film Festival screening at the Ford Amphitheatre. Ol’-skool funkateers note: The Kashmere Stage Band is scheduled to appear live at the screening.
Bred in Houston’s Kashmere Gardens ‘hood, the band has enjoyed a cult rep for a few years now, thanks to coverage in Waxpoetics magazine and a reissue of the group’s privately pressed recordings by the hip L.A. label Now Again Records. The two-CD comp comprises 1968-74 sides directed by the educator Conrad O. Johnson.
