Jonathan Gold on Darby Crash and the Germs

Darby-s-last-stand.4974899.40 As noted in a previous SoundCheck post, Rhino Handmade is reissuing a complete version of L.A. punk forefathers the Germs’ final show at the late, lamented Starwood on Dec. 3, 1980, days before lead singer Darby Crash’s overdose suicide. But you don’t have to buy the package to read Jonathan Gold’s I-was-there liner notes: The LA Weekly’s Web site has thoughtfully posted them here.

Gold is best known today as the Weekly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning food writer. But back in the punk day, this writer would frequently run into him at any number of Hollywood hellholes, where he covered music for the long-defunct Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. It’s nice to see him back on his old beat, 30 years later.

Gold also talks to the Germs’ Don Bolles and Pat Smear in a separate Weekly story.
