Grammys modify eligibility rules

Academy changes new artist, classical requirements

Following a highly publicized gaffe involving Lady Gaga’s exclusion from the new artist Grammy Awards category in 2010, the Recording Academy announced amendments to the eligibility process on Wednesday.

Acts that have been unsuccessfully nominated for a single or as a collaborator on a compilation or another artist’s album before issuing an album of their own are now eligible for new artist consideration.

Under the old rules, Gaga was deemed ineligible in the category — after the explosion of her late-2008 debut album “The Fame” — because an early single had unsuccessfully competed for an award in a dance category in the 2009 Grammys race.

The Recording Academy also announced changes in the classical categories. Classical producers are now eligible for the producer of the year category by submitting just one recording, as opposed to the three-recording minimum in the past. Acknowledging comprehensive packages devoted to a composer’s work recorded over a long period of time, multidisc classical boxed sets are now eligible for consideration if more than 51% of the material is more than 5 years old.

Recording Academy prexy Neil Portnow said in a statement, “These eligibility amendments recognize present trends in music, and our board of trustees continues to demonstrate its dedication to keeping the Recording Academy a pertinent and responsive organization in our dynamic music community.”
