'Idol'-style show sets out to find five femme rockers

The search is on to find Asia’s answer to the Spice Girls.

FarWest Entertainment, founded by former prexy of Walt Disney (Asia) Jon Niermann, is producing “Project Lotus” as an “Idol”-style reality show to find five femmes to form a Pan-Asian rock band.

It will choose 25 finalists from China, India, Korea, Japan and the Philippines and take them to its Hong Kong academy where they will be trained over eight weeks. The 25 will be whittled down to the final five who will form the group.

Songwriter and record producer Eliot Kennedy, who has worked with the Spice Girls, Bryan Adams and Aretha Franklin among others, is also producing “Project Lotus.”

The project’s India partner, Zee Café channel, will air the show in December. Producers are seeking distribs in other Asian countries.

“There’s no better way to connect the world than through music and entertainment,” Niermann said. “We hope we will build a group that will blaze the way for more talented Asian performers in the international entertainment scene.”

FarWest has bases in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai.
