Christina usurps Jack as the Lakers’ go-to mascot


Given the Lakers triumph over the Celtics on Thursday night, fighting their way back from a third-quarter deficit that grew as large as 13 points, sports writers and analysts have come up with all kinds of theories about how the Lakers were able to go from being down 3-2 in the series to winning the championship. Was it Ron Artest’s scrappy play and sudden burst of offense in Game 7? Derek Fisher’s “Giant Killer” focus in the clutch? Pau Gasol’s indomitable length? No, it was Christina Aguilera’s melisma-laden interpretation of the National Anthem performed before Game 6 and Game 7, when the Lakers had their backs against the wall and it was do or die in both situations. She acted as their good luck charm. In fact, the rings on her left hand represent the number of championships Phil Jackson has won over the past decade. Coincidence? I think not…
