Castro collects four Blues Music Awards

Singer-guitarist wins big at Memphis ceremony

Singer-guitarist Tommy Castro scooped up four Blues Music Awards at the non-profit Blues Foundation’s annual ceremony, held in Memphis on Thursday.

During the Cook Convention Center fete, journeyman Castro received the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, and also took home honors for band of the year, best contemporary blues male artist and best contemporary blues album (for “Hard Believer,” on Chicago indie Alligator Records).

Singer-guitarist Joe Louis Walker’s “Between a Rock and the Blues,” issued by Canada’s Stony Plain Records, was named album of the year. Louisiana Red and David Maxwell’s “You Got to Move” (Blue Max) was tagged best acoustic album, and Red was named best acoustic artist.

Canadian trio Monkey Junk’s “Tiger in Your Tank” took best new artist debut honors.

Chicago guitar titan Buddy Guy was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Bonnie Raitt.

Formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards, the Blues Music Awards are sponsored by the Gibson Foundation and BMI.
