Broadcast Music, Inc. has expanded its tracking of live music performances to include smaller concert events. The performing rights organization, which reps more than 400,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, will now pay quarterly performance royalties on the top 300 concert tours, events and fests in the U.S. as measured by Pollstar research.
Previously, BMI paid royalties twice a year based on the top 200 tours. Live performance royalties are paid to the songwriter and/or composer and publisher when a song is performed in a public setting. In the case of live gigs, the royalty amounts are based on the size of the venue.
“The expansion of the live pop concert distribution is the result of an on-going effort at BMI to capture information on musical performances in additional venues on a more frequent basis, thereby increasing the number of titles eligible for payment each quarter,” said Michael O’Neill, BMI senior VP, repertoire and licensing, in the announcement.
According to BMI, the expanded distribution model almost doubles the number of song titles for payment than was previously tracked, benefiting nearly 800 additional songwriters and composers, along with publishers, based on the first payment cycle, dated March 29.
Last year, BMI reported $905 million in performing rights collections.
