Few Beatlemaniacs who witnessed the Beatles’ U.S. apotheosis on “The Ed Sullivan Show” can fail to be excited anew by footage from the band’s 1964-65 appearances on the CBS variety show. It’s evergreen stuff, which is why Universal Music Enterprises is releasing a spruced-up edition of the Fabs’ Sullivan dates on DVD Sept. 7.
The material has been available on DVD before, and has been sold widely at $9.99 of late. But the new two-disc UME set — containing the complete shows of Feb. 9, 16 and 24, 1964 and Sept. 12, 1965 — has been cleaned up “frame by frame,” according to executive producer Andrew Solt. The set will also include material from other Sullivan shows, including an interview with the Beatles that hasn’t been seen since its initial airing in ’64.
