A winning combo: Wagoner and Morgan

PorterWagoner L.A. film critic and historian Kim Morgan writes a highly personalized movie blog, the Sunset Gun, that sometimes slips into the realm of music. Morgan is fond of noir (and has contributed commentary tracks to DVDs like “Roadhouse”), and her taste in tunes is reflective of that unsettling American strain. Her most recent post is a homage to country singer Porter Wagoner, whose gaudy rhinestoned Nudie suits covered a heart filled with country darkness.

Morgan’s brief but tasty piece includes a link to a priceless video for one of Wagoner’s classics, “The Cold Hard Facts of Life.” If your taste runs to the outré, you may want to investigate the like-titled three-CD compilation of Wagoner’s RCA concept albums, released by Germany’s Bear Family Records two years ago.
