‘Treme’ out of Emmy music race

Score for HBO's skein doesn't fit categories

HBO’s “Treme,” one of the year’s most talked-about, music-centric series, won’t be taking home any Emmys for music.

TV Academy officials confirmed that “Treme” has not been entered in any music category and that it isn’t eligible in at least three anyway. Its theme, “Treme Song” by John Boutte, was not composed for the show (it’s from Boutte’s 2003 album “Jambalaya”), it has no dramatic underscore and it doesn’t qualify for music direction.

There is no Emmy for music supervision, which is what Blake Leyh does in overseeing all of the live performances by New Orleans musicians and clearing the many songs heard during the show.

Although Leyh confirms that “there is a little bit of original music that’s been written for the show,” which might make it eligible in Emmy’s song category, none has been entered. “If winning Emmys was what we were focused on,” he says, “we’d all be working on a different show.”
