3D offering tops Friday B.O. with an estimated $20.7 million

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek Forever After” topped its box office competition on Friday.

The 3D pic had 4,359 engagements (of those 2,373 are 3D, which also included 194 Imax screens) and earned about $20.7 million, which far outpaced any other film in the top ten this week. Robert Downey Jr. starrer “Iron Man 2” grabbed the No. 2 spot, earning about $7.5 million in 4,177 runs for the Paramount and Marvel film. Universal’s “Robin Hood” came in third with an estimate of $5.6 million in 3,505 engagements. Coming in fourth was Summit’s “Letters to Juliet,” which earned about $3 million in 1,831 locations.

Universal’s new comedy “MacGruber” took 5th position this week, earning about $1.6 million in 2,551 runs.

The Queen Latifah-fronted “Just Wright” collected an estimate of $1.3 million in 1,831 runs, placing the Fox Searchlight film at No. 6. Fox’s “Date Night” is still hanging in there, earning about $925,000 in 1,869 engagements, and comes in at No. 8. Rounding out the bottom three are Warner Bros. “Nightmare on Elm Street” ($765,000 in 2,125 locations), the Paramount and DreamWorks Animation 3D pic “How to Train Your Dragon” ($438,000 in 1,751 engagements) and Big Picture’s “Kites” ($341,000 in 208 runs).
