‘Saw 3D’ tops Friday B.O.

Latest in series earns $10.7 mil with strong 3D sales

To the surprise of no one, Lionsgate’s latest installation of its “Saw” series earned the top numbers at Friday’s box office.

The 3D scarer — which opened just in time for Halloween weekend — earned about $10.7 million in 2,808 runs; 93% of those dollars came from 3D screens. The pic topped Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity 2,” which collected about $5.8 mil in 3,239 engagements. “Paranormal ” dropped a steep 71% from last Friday, largely due to the pic’s $6.3 million in midnight grosses from its opening weekend.

Summit’s “Red” took the No. 3 position with about $3.4 million in 3,349 runs, while Paramount’s “Jackass 3D” earned about $3.1 million. Warner Bros. pic “Hereafter” rounded out the top 5 with an estimate of $2.1 million in 2,424 engagements.

Disney’s “Secretariat” is still in the race with about $1.58 million in 3,108 runs, while Sony’s “The Social Network” made around $1.5 million in 2,767 engagements. Three Warner Bros. pics took the bottom three positions with “Life As We Know It” (about $1.45 million in 2,860 runs), “The Town” (about $619,000 in 1,608 runs) and “Legend of the Guardians” (about $482,000 in 2,010 engagements).
