Third installment of series outpaces 'Airbender'

Audiences are sinking their teeth into “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”

The third installment of the book-to-film series topped the Friday box office, earning around $28.5 million in 4,416 engagements. This gives the film roughly $80.2 million in domestic ticket sales since Wednesday.

The film far outpaced its closest competitor, Paramount’s “The Last Airbender,” which earned about $16 million in 3,169 runs. ‘Airbender’s’ take included tickets sold at midnight shows and at 3D theaters.

Disney’s “Toy Story 3″ earned about $10.4 million on Friday in 4,028 runs. Sony’s “Grown Ups” grabbed the No. 4 spot with an estimate of $7 million in 3,534 runs. Fox’s “Knight and Day,” which stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, came in at No. 5 with about $3.4 million in 3,104 engagements.

Sony’s “The Karate Kid” earned about $2.7 million in 3,109 runs, while Fox’s “A-Team” chased it with an estimate of $1 million in 2,135 engagements. Universal’s “Get Him to the Greek” took in about $442,000 in 884 runs, and Paramount’s “Shrek Forever After” made roughly $300,000 in 957 engagements. Fox Searchlight’s “Cyrus” took the No. 10 spot on Friday with an estimate of $239,000 in 77 runs.
