‘Dinner’ takes top spot at Friday B.O.

Redux of Gaul laffer edges out 'Inception'

Friday night was a good time for “Dinner” and a movie.

Paramount’s buddy comedy “Dinner for Schmucks” grabbed the No. 1 box office position on Friday. The Steve Carell and Paul Rudd starrer earned about $8.4 million in 2,911 engagements, edging out Warner Bros. “Inception,” which took in about $8.1 million in 3,545 runs.

Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” grabbed the No. 3 spot, earning Sony about $5.9 million in 3,612 engagements, while Universal’s new pic “Charlie St. Cloud” earned about $5.6 million in 2,718 runs. Rounding out the top five was Universal’s “Despicable Me,” which collected about $4.7 million in 3,602 runs.

New 3D pic “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” earned about $4.2 million in 3,705 engagements, and Disney’s “Toy Story 3” earned roughly $1.4 million in 2,105 runs. Another Disney film, “Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” ran neck and neck with “Toy Story 3,” earning an estimate of $1.2 million in 2,524 engagements. Sony’s “Grown Ups,” also earned about $1.2 million in 2,269 runs, as did Fox’s family friendly “Ramona and Beezus” which showed at 2,719 engagements.
