Whoopi Goldberg will appear in Broadway tuner “The Lion King” — but only for one night.
The Thursday stint will amount to a string of surprise cameos reminiscent of gags that were part of the Tony ceremony she hosted in 2008. Goldberg’s appearance in “Lion King” was announced Wednesday on “The View,” the morning gabfest of which Goldberg is moderator.
Thesp, who voiced one of the hyenas in the original “Lion King” animated pic, was last on Broadway in “Xanadu” in 2008.
The “Lion King” gig seems like a publicity stunt to drum up biz for a show during Broadway’s annual January doldrums, but it’s tough to view the Disney musical, a constant presence in the Rialto top 10, as ailing. Last week, the first of the post-holiday slide, the tuner grossed a robust $1.4 million.
Footage from Goldberg’s appearances in “Lion King” will be shown on “The View” next week.
