Walton to helm ‘Candida’

Brian Murray, Melissa Errico to star

Director-designer Tony Walton will helm Melissa Errico and Brian Murray in an Off Broadway production of “Candida” at Irish Repertory Theater.

Errico will play the title character in George Bernard Shaw’s 1894 play about a woman torn between her husband (to be played by Irish Rep producing director Ciaran O’Reilly) and a young poet (Sam Underwood). Xanthe Elbrick and Josh Grisetti also appear, joined by Murray (“Mary Stuart”) as Candida’s father.

Walton (“Guys and Dolls”) has directed and designed multiple productions at Irish Rep including “Major Barbara” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.” “Candida” is the latest outing for Irish Rep following its much-lauded staging of “The Emperor Jones,” currently playing Soho Playhouse in a transfer engagement that began late last year.

Candida” begins previews Feb. 24 ahead of a March 7 opening.
