Taper taps starry lineup

Lithgow, Dukakis join theater's 2010-11 season

Plays starring John Lithgow and Olympia Dukakis will join the previously announced Jane Fonda solo show at the Mark Taper Forum’s upcoming season.

Announced Tuesday by Center Theater Group topper Michael Ritchie, the 2010-11 season kicks off with Lithgow’s “Stories by Heart,” (Jan. 4-Feb. 13) in which he reads works from P.G. Wodehouse and Ring Lardner.

Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This,” directed by Nicholas Martin; Theresa Rebeck’s ” The Novelist”; and “The Vigil,” written and directed by Morris Panych and starring Dukakis, are part of the lineup. “Burn” starts previews March 23 for an April 3 opening and closes May 1. “Novelist” doesn’t have a director yet, but is skedded to start previews Sept. 7, 2011, for a Sept. 18-Oct. 16 run.

“Vigil” will close out the season, starting previews Nov. 2, 2011, for a Nov. 6-Dec. 18 stint.

As previously announced Fonda’s “33 Variations,” written and directed by Moises Kaufman, is part of the bill. Previews start Jan. 30 for a Feb. 9 opening. It closes March 6.

“The purpose of theater has always been to tell stories, and I think this new season at the Taper is exceptionally rich in the stories it tells about our society — its values, customs, myths and idiosyncrasies,” Ritchie said in a statement.
