Sheen takes on great Dane

Actor to topline London production of 'Hamlet'

LONDON — Michael Sheen (“Frost/Nixon,” “The Queen”) will play the Dane in a new production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at London’s Young Vic theater.

Production will be helmed by Ian Rickson, the former a.d. of London’s Royal Court whose Broadway credits include “The Seagull” and the forthcoming transfer of the U.K. hit “Jerusalem.” Rickson will be making his Shakespeare debut with the production, set to open in winter 2011.

Sheen’s version of Hamlet will follow Rory Kinnear’s performance in the role at the National Theater in Nicholas Hytner’s production opening in September, not to mention Jude Law’s recent performance, which has netted him a Tony bid this year for best actor.
