“Red” turns Frank Langella green

Play garners acclaim at Outer Critics Circle awards

The participants were more famous than the no-shows at the Outer Critics Circle awards last Thursday. Several of the honorees couldn’t make the ceremony, but those who did show up included Denzel Washington (“Fences”), Catherine Zeta-Jones (“A Little Night Music”) and John Kander (“The Scottsboro Boys”).

Laid-back affair at Sardi’s featured patter delivered by the cast of “God of Carnage,” but clearly not written by Jeff Daniels, who, tripped up by a typo, said, “Who wrote this shit?”

From the podium, Frank Langella praised the playwrighting acumen of “Red” scribe John Logan, and went on to reveal his own envy of “Red” thesps Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne.

“Look at my face, John,” Langella commanded, parodying lines from Logan’s script. “What do you see? What do you see? Green!”
