Raul Esparza and Brooke Shields headline the world premiere of the new musical “Leap of Faith,” to open at L.A’s Ahmanson Theater on Oct. 3.
The tuner is based on the 1992 Steve Martin film about a fake faith healer who tries to seduce a skeptical smalltown waitress.
The show features a new score by Alan Menken, book by Janus Cercone with Glenn Slater and lyrics by Slater. Rob Ashford, now represented on Broadway with the “Promises, Promises” revival, will direct and choreograph. Ashford’s last Music Center outing was last autumn’s production of “Parade” at the Mark Taper Forum.
If “Leap of Faith” makes the leap to Broadway, it would be the first original-tuner gig for either Esparza and Shields on the Great White Way. Shields has starred in four Broadway revivals, including “Chicago” and “Wonderful Town.” Esparza’s Broadway resume includes stints in the revivals “Company” and “The Rocky Horror Show,” as well as “Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang” and “Taboo.”
