Phylicia Rashad will direct a 2011 Los Angeles production of “A Raisin in the Sun,” the play for which Rashad picked up a 2004 Tony for her turn in the Broadway revival.
Rashad’s first gig as a legit director was a 2007 Seattle staging of “Gem of the Ocean,” another play in which she’s appeared. She later reprised her “Raisin” role in the 2008 telepic adaptation for ABC.
L.A. hasn’t seen a fully-staged production of “Raisin” in some 20 years, according to Ebony Repertory Theater, which produces the run. Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play follows an African-American family living on the south side of Chicago.
Casting has not yet been nailed down for the L.A. incarnation, skedded to open March 25 at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center.
