‘Phantom’ returns to the road

Road grosses

NEW YORK Road grosses rose 4.3% in Week 10 (July 26-Aug. 1) as “Phantom of the Opera” returned from a one-week layoff and “Dreamgirls” began a respite of its own. The total gross for the 10-show slate was $11,928,978. The majority of repeating shows saw a minor bump in their grosses, with “Legally Blonde” notching the biggest increase — 8.5%. Perhaps the biggest shift was that for the first time in nearly a month, “Wicked” did not break two house records in the same week. For each of the past three weeks, the show’s first and second companies have broken house records throughout the Midwest. This time, the first company came up short at Columbus’ Ohio Theater but the second company continued its streak, breaking its own mark at Milwaukee’s Marcus Center with a total of $1,450,639. In Vancouver, “The Lion King” broke its own record for the week’s highest gross: $1,876,983.
