Musicals nab four awards each

The winners’ list of the 60th annual Outer Critics Circle Awards is perhaps most notable for its three ties.

But that unusual hat trick may not be all that surprising in a divergent theater season in which no awards frontrunner, along the lines of last sea son’s juggernaut “Billy Elliot,” ever emerged. The 2009-10 lineup has split legiters into camps of partisans.

New tuner “Memphis” and musical revival “La Cage aux Folles” topped the winners list, with each scoring four kudos apiece. But two “Memphis” laurels were shared with nominees from another show.

Lead actress Montego Glover had a joint win with “A Little Night Music” topliner Catherine Zeta-Jones, while Sergio Trujillo tied for the choreography award with Bill T. Jones for “Fela!” (“Memphis” also picked up laurels for new Broadway musical and for score.)

The third category to see a tie was Off Broadway tuner, which went to both “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” and “The Scottsboro Boys.” The final show from Kander and Ebb, “Scottsboro” will likely land on Broadway next season — and recently Rialto rumblings have begun to emerge, too, for American-history rock redux “Bloody Bloody.”

Top play contenders also split votes. While John Logan’s Rothko bio “Red” nabbed the award for new Broadway play, fellow nominee “Next Fall” bested “Red” for the John Gassner Award for new American play.

On the other hand, the Broadway revival of “Fences” seemed to unite voters, picking up the kudo for Main Stem play revival as well as lead acting trophies for stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.

Horton Foote marathon “The Orphans’ Home Cycle” scored for Off Broadway play and director (Michael Wilson).

Outer Critics, an org made up of journos who cover New York theater for media outlets that aren’t Gotham- centric, hands out its awards at a May 27 ceremony at Sardi’s.
