La Jolla program gains grant

$900,000 will help Theater Without Walls

The James Irvine Foundation has awarded a $900,000 grant to the La Jolla Playhouse’s Theater Without Walls program.

For the next four years, the playhouse will commission and present 40 to 70 productions throughout San Diego.

The grant will allow the program to “expand the range of artists working at the playhouse, as we bring in theatrical visionaries from around the world for new residencies and special performances,” said artistic director Christopher Ashley.

Combining non-traditional theater spaces with digital technology and social media, the playhouse will partner with agency Digitaria to offer interactive kiosks and micropayments via cell phone.
