Public's associate producer returns to Mass. theater fest

Jenny Gersten has been named the new artistic director of the Williamstown Theater Fest, the annual summer legit festival held in Williamstown, Mass.

Appointment reps a return to old stomping grounds for Gersten, currently the associate producer of Off Broadway’s Public Theater. She was associate producer at Williamstown from 1996 to 2004, just prior to serving as a.d. of Off Broadway’s Naked Angels.

The 56-year-old WTF has long attracted a fairly starry lineup for a summer stage festival, thanks in part to its relative proximity to New York and the Gotham pool of stage talent. The 2010 lineup includes acting gigs for current Tony nominees Jessica Hecht and Christopher Fitzgerald, as well as the world preem of the “Romeo and Juliet”-meets-Jeff-Buckley tuner “The Last Goodbye.”

Gersten assumes the top post at WTF after the upcoming season. Current a.d. Nicholas Martin announced late last year he intended to step down from the post.
