Guests jammed the Marriott Marquis ballroom for the Drama League luncheon and awards ceremony Friday. With more than 40 nominees and honorees filling the three-tiered dais, the confab resembled nothing so much as the iconic photo of MGM’s all-star luncheon of 1949. “It feels like we’re at a Trump wedding, doesn’t it?” said Hugh Jackman as he surveyed the crowd.
Among the many thesp speeches, Judith Ivey finally rose to say, “Thank you, Drama League. I know how hard it is to get 50 actors together, feed them and get them to talk about themselves!”
There to receive a lifetime achievement award, Nathan Lane said, “Thank you for choosing me for this honor before the reviews for ‘The Addams Family’ appeared. The good news is, the people of America don’t like to read!” He went on to say, “It’s no secret that ‘The Addams Family’ was not received well in certain circles — like the Earth! Yet it has defied the odds, reminding me of what my dear, departed mother used to say: ‘Oh, Nathan — fuck ’em!’ “
