Cumming swings out of ‘Spider-Man’

Actor exits production after schedule delay

The Broadway incarnation of “Spider-Man” has not only lost the girl — it’s lost the villain, too.

Alan Cumming, who had been set to play the Green Goblin in the delayed mega-musical, has now bowed out of the production, following in the footsteps of Evan Rachel Wood, who was to have played love interest Mary Jane but withdrew from the show last month.

“Because of a scheduling conflict, Alan Cumming will not be playing the role of the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark’ on Broadway,” a rep for the production said in a statement. “Casting and a production schedule for ‘Spider-Man’ will be announced soon.”

Large-scale musical, with music by U2’s Bono and the Edge, was skedded to open in February but difficulties in securing the cash for the show’s enormous capitalization costs — said to be in the range of $50 million — pushed back the timeline.

No exact sked has been set, although producers have promised a 2010 start date and one potential timeline could see the show opening in the fall.

Julie Taymor (“The Lion King”) directs “Spider-Man,” to which thesp Reeve Carney remains attached to play the title role.
