Connick’s crooning attracts Broadway crowds

Overall box office saw summer business increase a bit

With tourism still going strong in Gotham, overall Broadway box office inched up by about $575,000 last week — with a large chunk of that attributable to Harry Connick Jr.

The performer’s concert outing, “Harry Connick Jr. in Concert on Broadway,” played six perfs last week and had a whopping $1,139,695 to show for it. That’s about $380,000 more than Connick brought in with the four perfs he did the prior frame.

“Wicked” logged a particularly strong $1,707,154. The tuner is no stranger to stellar B.O., of course, but last week was the first time the show topped the $1.7 million mark since the winter holidays (when the show posted weekly sales of more than $2 million).

Also among the nine productions in the millionaires’ club was “The Phantom of the Opera” ($1,012,071), always one to benefit from an influx of tourists, and “Mary Poppins” ($1,186,992), sustaining the strong B.O. it has logged throughout the summer.

Meanwhile, Tony winner “Memphis” ($960,594) inched closer to the $1 million mark and fellow Tony nominee “American Idiot” ($806,283) also logged an uptick.

Among the few shows to post dips last week were “La Cage aux Folles” ($586,590), suffering from multiple skedded absences of topliner Kelsey Grammer, and “Next to Normal” ($276,145), in its first week with several new cast members.

Also down a bit were “A Little Night Music” ($468,750) and “Million Dollar Quartet” ($458,469), the latter still struggling to attract the attention of consumers.

As in past weeks, “Fela!” ($521,326) remained largely left out of the summertime bonanza, but it’s “Come Fly Away” ($574,485) that really seems to have cause for concern: The musical played to a low-low audience capacity averaging just 49%.
