President of stagehands' union gets third term
James J. Claffey Jr. has been re-elected for a third term as prexy of Local One, the Gotham area chapter of stagehands union IATSE. Claffey was first elected to the post in 2004 and then again in 2007. Later that year, the org’s contentious contract renegotiations with the Broadway League prompted the union to call a strike that darkened more than 25 Main Stem productions for 19 days. Claffey, who was theatrical business manager at Local One prior to stepping up to president, was elected by a wide margin to a three-year term. The union chapter has about 3000 members, with about 2200 working at any one time and approximately 180-200 employed on Broadway.
