Angela Lansbury, Barbara Cook, Victor Garber, Patti LuPone, Donna Murphy and Bernadette Peters are among the performers lined up for the latest gala celebration of Stephen Sondheim to be announced.
John Doyle, whose revivals of Sondheim tuners “Sweeney Todd” and “Company” have both played Broadway in recent years, directs the New York City Center event, which also will include perfs from Joanna Gleason, Raul Esparza, Sutton Foster and Michael Cerveris.
With Sondheim turning 80 in March, there’s no shortage of birthday celebrations on tap for the spring, including a new Roundabout Theater Company revue of the composer’s work, “Sondheim on Sondehim,” bowing soon on the Rialto.
The City Center gala, which benefits the org’s educations and artistic programs (including the annual Encores! series of tuner revivals), kicks off at City Center before heading to the Plaza Hotel for dinner. Event is set for April 26.
