Actor to star in MTC's 'Whipping Man'

Andre Braugher will topline Manhattan Theater Club’s upcoming Off Broadway production of “The Whipping Man.”

Thesp will play one of two former slaves in Matthew Lopez’s play, set just after the Civil War. The storyline follows a Jewish Confederate soldier who returns to his family home and celebrates Passover with the pair of ex-slaves.

Braugher (“Homicide: Life on the Street”), whose current TV gig is TNT skein “Men of a Certain Age,” has a list of stage credits that includes the title role in the 1996 Shakespeare in the Park production of “Henry V.”

“Whipping Man” has been produced at theaters including Luna Stage, the Old Globe and Barrington Stage. MTC run is the play’s Gotham preem.

Further casting in the three-character show remains to be announced. Doug Hughes (“Elling,” “Doubt”) helms the staging, which begins previews Jan. 13 ahead of Feb. 1 opening.
