Summer run at Guthrie possible prelude to Broadway
Guthrie run is set to begin previews July 31 ahead of an August 6 opening, with the engagement playing through Sept. 25. Details for any potential return to Gotham remain up in the air.Plans for what is likely to result in a Broadway run for tuner “The Scottsboro Boys” continue to firm up, with the confirmation of an out-of-town stint at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater this summer. “Boys” has been tipped for a Rialto run since it played to packed houses at Off Broadway’s Vineyard Theater in a recent limited engagement. With no suitable Rialto venue available this season, word had began to circulate that the musical would head to the Guthrie prior to a Main Stem run next season. Tuner is presented at the Guthrie by special arrangement with Barry and Fran Weissler and Jackie Barlia Florin, the commercial producers attached to the project. The Weisslers also produced the long-running revival of “Chicago,” another tuner from the “Scottsboro” songwriting duo of John Kander and Fred Ebb (“Cabaret,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman”). Casting for the Minneapolis run of “Boys” has not yet been confirmed, although it’s understood that producers are hoping to bring back as many members as possible of the Vineyard cast, which included John Cullum and Brandon Victor Dixon. “Scottsboro Boys” is the last new musical to come out of the partnership of Kander and the late Ebb, who had worked on the show prior to Ebb’s 2004 death. Book is by David Thompson, with Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) on board as director-choreographer. Thematically serious tuner follows the real-life 1930s case of a group of African-American teens falsely accused of attacking a pair of white women. Story is ironically framed as a minstrel show.
