Younger crowd rocks with 'American Idiot'
Even before it began, Thursday night’s performance of “American Idiot” at the St. James Theater was special for the very young (by Broadway standards) audience. Shortly before the big red curtain went up, U2’s the Edge turned around in his seat to greet and shake hands with the man of the hour, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, who’d written the music. The aud, of course, went nuts. But that was nothing compared with Armstrong’s surprise visit to the stage at show’s end to perform the rock opera’s title song along with his Green Day comrades, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt. This is my first night on Broadway!” he announced.
